Introduction :
|
|
A French colony upto 1954, Pondicherry is a living monument of French
Culture in India. The Aurobindo Ashram and 'Auroville' the international
township are famous all over the world. Places of interest are
Sri Aurobindo Ashram Auroville - the brain
child of the mother and designed by French Architect roger Anger,
AuroVille was meant to be an experiment in international living where
man and women could live in peace and progress harmony with each other
above all creeds.Closer to the seafront, however, the atmosphere grows
tangibly more Gallic, as the bazaars give way to rows of houses whose
shuttered windows and colourwashed facades wouldn't look out of place in
Montpellier. For anyone familiar with the British colonial imprint, it
can induce culture shock to see richly ornamented Catholic churches. |
