The home of Rathores – The awesome princely city of Rajasthan. Founded in
1459 A.D. by Rao Jodha, today Jodhpur is one of the largest city of
Rajasthan. Once the capital city of the Marwar State, crowning it is the
imposing Mehrangarh Fort. The old city is situated at foothill of a
hillock. The city built in a high wall 10kms, long with 8 gates and
innumerable bastions. Umaid Bhawan Palace could be defined as Taj Mahal
of North India. The city carries rich heritage and culture and
flourishing industry of wood, cattle, camels, salt and agricultural
crops.
Famous for its magnificent forts and palaces, Jodhpur is the second
largest city of Rajasthan and a major tourist attraction in the country.
The city is situated at the edge of the Thar Desert with Jaisalmer on
its west, Barmar, Jalor and Pali on its south, Bikaner on its north, and
Nagaur on the eastern side. The city dominated by the massive Mehrangarh
fort on a rocky hill is charming with its wealth of historic attractions
and colourful markets which specialises in antiques. It is still one of
the leading centres of wool, cattle, camels and salt. Jodhpur was
founded by the Rajput chief Rao Jodha in 1459. The city was the
erstwhile capital of the Marwar state. |

Shopping : |
|
Jodhpur is especially known for its shopping and its wholesale and export
operations. Many European and North American dealers bypass other cities in
India and come directly to Jodhpur for most of their shopping. In response
to export markets, many of the factories and shops here design furniture and
metal work products that are geared to Western tastes. The best shopping is
found along the main roads of the new city. Even though the old city is an
interesting cultural experience, don't expect to do much shopping there. The
central market, or Ghasmandi Bazaar, is very popular with visitors. But the
really good stuff is found outside the city walls. |
